cBN and Diamond Blade Care

Metal and Nickel Bonded Diamond

It is meaningful to note that a Nickel bonded & Metal bonded diamond/cBN blades are not 100% resilient, that is, if a blade is deformed through mishandling it will always retain a certain amount of that deformation. Though it is conceivable that some mishandling may not have a noticeable impact on the cut quality (this would depend on the parameters required and the amount of damage done). But regardless, a sound handling procedure is paramount to the safe use, and overall robustness of any precision grinding process.

Resin Bonded Diamond Blades

A Resin Bond Diamond blade is a precise and delicate tool, and so if the blade is damaged in handling it may crack or break. It is conceivable that this damaged blade would go unnoticed through the mounting process and into the grinding process, obviously, this would be a dangerous situation. A sound handling procedure is paramount for the safe use, and overall robustness of a precision grinding/cutting process.

HANDLING

  • Always inventory the blades in the original package, as packaged from the manufacturer.  This will not only protect the blades, but also allow the pertinent blade information be readily available.
  • Store the package away from obvious hazards such as water, heat and dust.
  • Clean hands and a clean bench is required for any inspection or inventory purposes.
  • Handle the Blade(s) using the inside diameter hole whenever possible.

CLEANING

A careful and thorough cleaning is an important step to a reliable diamond blade grinding/cutting process. Listed are some guidelines:

  • All cleaning should be done in an area that is as particulate free as possible.  A clean room is optimal, but not absolutely required.
  • Use a residue free cleaning solvent.  Isoporpyl alcohol is recommended but acetone is also acceptable.
  • Use clean, laboratory grade lint free wipes.
  • Always visual inspect for any debris or particulate that might be imbedded or otherwise require special treatment to remove.
