Face Geometry

Understanding the effect of the face geometry as it correlates to the performance of the blade is an important step to the optimization of a cutting/grinding process.

Slots, Slits and Serration’s

There are numerous variations in the number and the configurations (types) used dependent on the desired results. There is one fundamental rule; there should be at least one slot in the cut at any given time. This can be calculated by taking into account the surface speed of the blade, the travel speed of the part and the spacing of the slots.

Listed below, are some advantages and disadvantages of using slotted blades.

Some advantages are:

  • Blades act softer, more free-cutting.
  • More effective cooling, especially in a very deep cut.                                Diamond Blade Face Geometry
  • More efficient swarf flushing.

Some disadvantages are:

  • The blades wear rate is usually higher.
  • Increased chip size and a rougher surface finish are frequently encountered.
  • Blade strength is decreased, which can cause an oversized kerf width.
